The Vocal Jazz Institute exists to strengthen and inspire the vocal jazz community by giving students a meaningful, high-quality experience in jazz singing, whether they are experienced performers or trying vocal jazz for the first time.

Who it is For

  • Choir students who have never participated in vocal jazz but want to explore the style

  • Students are currently involved in a vocal jazz ensemble

  • Singers preparing for the ILMEA Vocal Jazz Auditions

  • Students who want to grow in harmony singing, improvisation, and jazz performance

  • Required: Entering 9-12 grade

Whether a student arrives as an experienced jazz singer or completely new to the style, the Vocal Jazz Institute provides the skills, confidence, and inspiration to take their musicianship to the next level.

What Students Gain

By the end of the institute, each student will:

  • Learn and perform the full ILMEA Vocal Jazz audition repertoire

  • Develop harmony skills and a foundational understanding of jazz harmony

  • Receive a recording of their tonal skills

  • Learn the fundamentals of jazz improvisation

  • Receive a recording of their improvisation

  • Gain practical tools and resources to continue developing improvisation

  • Improve vocal technique specific to jazz styles

  • Learn proper microphone technique

  • Explore and understand a variety of vocal jazz styles and professional ensembles

  • Experience the energy and collaboration of a full vocal jazz group
